Homelessness is a challenge for all of us. It can affect anyone, at any stage in their lives, from any background. Together we can make a difference to support those in need.
Together with the local services sector, the City is taking meaningful, positive action to help people that are struggling to get back on their feet, and ensure there is a place for everyone.
Homelessness Week (August 1-7) is all about raising awareness of the impact of homelessness and the importance of providing solutions that make a difference to our community.
In Australia there are more than 116,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night. Homelessness Week aims to raise awareness of the impact of homelessness through national and local community events, including providing information on the importance of housing as a solution and educating communities on how they can make a difference.
The City acknowledges the great work being done by the community services sector in partnership with the City of Mandurah towards addressing homelessness and disadvantage in the community.
The sector-led Mandurah Homelessness and Street Present Strategy, which was launched in May 2021, outlines a coordinated and collaborative approach to supporting homeless and street present people in the city, focusing on four main objectives. It aims to break the cycle of homelessness for people currently living rough in Mandurah, and support vulnerable people in the community.
In partnership with St Patrick’s Community Support, the City is also continuing the two-year Assertive Outreach trial program, helping to address the complex issue of homelessness. The City and Council have also played a big part in advocating for the delivery of a Common Ground facility in Mandurah.
Together, we can work to support those in need. There are a number of community events and appeals in Mandurah during and around Homelessness Week:
